Most injuries are preventable.

Each day in Kansas, an average of 4 people die from injury.

Each week, on average, 28 Kansas residents die from injury:

  • 9 die in traffic crashes
  • 6 die from a firearm
  • 3 die from a fall
  • 2 die from suffocation
  • 2 die from poisoning
  • 6 die from injuries related to fire, machinery or other injury

Injury prevention generally follows three E's

Education - of the general public and targeted groups, such as policymakers, is important in the long term prevention of injuries

Enforcement - passage and enforcement of laws and policies directed toward the prevention of injuries is critical

Engineering - technology changes that provide for a safer environment is one of the most effective strategies (along with legislation) to prevent injuries.

Injury prevention projects in Kansas Include:

  • Kansas SAFE KIDS Coalition, targeting unintentional injuries in children and youth ages 1-14.
  • Kansas Regional Injury Prevention Initiative, conducted in partnership with the Kansas SAFE KIDS Coalition and the Kansas Trauma Program, provides support for injury prevention projects across the state.
  • Kansas Fire/Burn Injury Prevention Program, conducts fire prevention education programs and installs smoke detectors in high risk households in targeted areas of the state.
  • Prevention of Abuse and Violence of women with disabilities partnership grant with the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence.
  • Emergency Medical Services for Children grant includes support for families with special needs children and annual training/education.
  • The Rape Prevention and Education Grant funds are for the development of primary (pre-injury) prevention programs to decrease the incidence of sexual violence against women. The primary focus of the funds is for interventions focused on the potential perpetrators of violence through activities that change attitudes, behaviors, and environments.
